The Nebraska racecourse at Madison Downs was a 4 furlong oval course, with separate 5 furlong and 7 furlong chutes and 145 metre home straight, situated at the Madison County Fairgrounds. It had an open air grandstand and, at its height, the grandstand could cater for 2500 punters. It opened on 8th July 1947 and offered low grade racing for the next 20 years. However, by 1966 the state passed a Bill which was to prove fatal for this racecourse and many others. In the past, racecourses that were 4 furlongs in length were exempt from paying Tax on their first $1 million of takings. Once that law was changed the racecourse was no longer financial viable and had closed within a few years. The course closed on 2nd October 1971 and today no evidence remains of the racecourse.
